Black Dice Big Deal

Since this Brooklyn-based experimental group has gone through phases including vicious punk-noise, relaxing/bracing tribal drone and other hard-to-classify artsy-techno endeavors, I wasn’t sure what to expect from their first new music in four years. As it turns out, this two-track EP shows that Black Dice is going in a more accessible direction. For the title track, the group uses their trademark quirky electronics and puzzling vocals to create a refreshing, twangy guitar-driven tune that’s bound to bring good vibes. The B-side “Last Laugh” goes for a different kind of funky sound, relying more on a hip-hop-beat for another infectious experience.

Various Artists Country Funk Volume II: 1967-1974

The label describes it as a “genre with no name”, but country funk – a melding of the souls of rustic and urban music for a surprisingly effective heartfelt and gritty sound – was practiced by many of country’s biggest names, as heard on this compilation. Willie Nelson, for example, conveys a wry attitude on “Shotgun Willie”, providing a satirical glimpse of hillbilly stereotypes set to a groovy rhythm section. One of the funk-heaviest songs is easily the Jim Ford rarity “Rising Sign”, sounding like it’s straight from a glitzy 70s nightclub.
