DIIV
Is the Is Are

(Captured Tracks)
Musically, this Brooklyn band sounds like it echoes the 80s, with over an hour of reverb-soaked dream-pop/shoegaze with guitars like an endless beachside sunset. This sophomore record came about during a difficult period for the band: frontman Zachary Cole Smith was battling drug addiction, got arrested and wound up in rehab. Thus, the lyrics were inspired by his desire to overcome the struggles he experienced, including fighting for his life (as described in the title track, for example.)

Over the Rhine
Blood Oranges in the Snow

(Great Speckled Dog)
Named after a neighborhood in their hometown Cincinnati, Over the Rhine are an indie-folk group who play warm and listener-friendly acoustic guitar-and-piano-based music on this holiday-themed album. There are expected themes of love and yearning, but its engrossing themes go beyond mere sentimentality. These include the perspective of a son thinking about his deceased father on Christmas Eve (“My Father’s Body”) and a laid-off father hoping to provide his daughter with a great summer (“If We Make It Through December”.)
