Blanck Mass World Eater

(Sacred Bones)

As one would expect from a member of the British drone/noise duo Fuck Buttons, Benjamin John Power creates a thought-provoking ambient electronic sound laden with loops, beats and various distortion on this third album from his solo project. Opening with what sounds like a whimsically dark movie theme steadily being layered with noise and chopped-up vocals, it gives way to the definite highlight “Rhesus Negative”: nine minutes of intense beats and soaring ambience like a theme for a high-flying airship. “Silent Treatment” is one of the more laid-back tracks with a head-bobbing hip-hop-style beat backing glistening electronics and lots more chopped-and-screwed vocals.

Hollis Brown Gets Loaded

(Alive Records)

After covering the entirety of The Velvet Underground’s 1970 album Loaded at a Lou Reed benefit show, Queens-based rock band Hollis Brown decided to go to the studio to record it. Though it’s no easy feat to faithfully cover an entire classic album, these guys manage to pull it off thanks to their classic Americana-based rock and roll sound that feels totally natural. Hopefully Hollis Brown will play some material from this album at their free show with Frank Viele at New Haven’s BAR on Wednesday, May 3rd.
