Public Memory Veil of Counsel
(Felte)
Continuing from where he left off with the debut record Wuthering Drum, Brooklyn musician Robert Toher finds new morosely beautiful, ghostly vocals-and-synth-laden paths to take his electronics-based Public Memory project on this EP. The three tracks are strong enough to stand on their own without sounding like mere leftovers: opener “Verdict” sounds like the calm resolution after a storm has ended. “Afterlife” uses energetic percussion that gets joined with a truly refreshing piano melody at one point, and “Ecco” ends on a satisfying note in a shadowy (yet strangely welcoming) futuristic style.

Lewis
L’Amour [Reissue]
(Light in the Attic)
Using the pseudonym Lewis, Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist Randall Wulff released the albums L’Amour and Romantic Times in 1983 and 1985, but they didn’t gain much attention until a vinyl collector named Jon Murphy found a copy of L’Amour at a flea market in 2014. Upon listening to it, he was fascinated by its ethereal sound primarily based around delicate crooning, hazy synth, shimmering piano, and gentle acoustic guitar. As word spread to friends, Lewis (who now lives a mostly low-key life) and his music started attracting serious collector interest, leading to his records finally getting reissues to make his uniquely romantic, atmospheric synth-rock more widely accessible.
