Half Japanese
Hear the Lions Roar
(Fire)
Surviving since 1975 thanks to the interest generated by their uniquely unconventional, malleable approach to songwriting, Maryland art-punk band Half Japanese continue their strangely appealing color-outside-the-lines style on this sixteenth record. Though they still eschew standards such as tuning, their songs (described primarily as “monster songs and love songs”) are accessible and downright catchy, with the irresistibly bouncy, rock-and-roll twang-laden “Of Course It Is” being one of my favorites.

Synthesize the Soul: Astro-Atlantic Hypnotica from the Cape Verde Islands 1973-1988
(Ostinato)
During an era of political and economic instability after winning independence from Portugal in 1975, thousands of Cape Verdeans left their small archipelago nation and immigrated to various cities in the West. Despite not receiving a warm welcome in Europe, some of them (young visionary Paulino Vieira was a particularly strong force) developed a scene combining their traditional sounds with synthesized dance music. The resulting songs were (and still are) vibrant, multi-layered and conjure up an exotic and festive mood with synth, guitars, horns and more coupled with various vocals.
