Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings Miss Sharon Jones! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
(Daptone)
Soul and funk singer Sharon Jones had started performing in the early 1970s (during her teenage years) but after years of odd jobs, she finally got attention in 1996 after contributing backing vocals to famous soul singer Lee Fields. After several solo singles, she released her first full-length record under the name Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings in 2002, receiving critical acclaim that would continue throughout the 2000s (including a Grammy nomination.) Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with cancer in 2013: that experience was chronicled in the documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, which was released only a few months before her death in November 2016. This soundtrack compiles various songs throughout her career, concluding with the previously unreleased, autobiographical track “I’m Still Here”. It serves as a reminder of how spirited and enthusiastic she was as a figure of the soul revival, undaunted by her lifelong career struggle and even performing wig-free after losing her hair due to chemotherapy.

William Tyler
Modern Country
(Merge)
Also known for his work with Lambchop and Silver Jews, Nashville-born guitarist and composer William Tyler plays instrumental folk-rock / Americana that uses memorable chords but is more thoughtful and explorative than pop, comparable to artists such as Bill Frisell or Neu! His melodic songs incorporate traditional country elements such as pedal steel guitar, but give off an atmospheric, sometimes almost post-rock vibe (his backing ensemble includes Phil Cook of Hiss Golden Messenger, Darin Gray of Tweedy, and Glenn Kotche of Wilco.) Nine-minute opener “Highway Anxiety”, for example, sounds perfect for an introspective journey across wide-open spaces.
