Vessel Queen of Golden Dogs
(Tri Angle)
Bristol-based experimental producer Sebastian Gainsborough has changed his sound significantly since his debuted with the album Order of Noise six years ago. He’s discarded the dub and techno elements for an abstract blend of chamber music and electronic beats, combining the centuries old with the modern. Lead single “Argo (For Maggie)” begins with unsettling strings that soon give way to thick, pumping beats and swelling synth. The haunting “Torno-me eles e nao eu (For Remedios)” consists of layered vocals from soprano Olivia Chaney: she sings a 1930 work by Portugese poet Fernando Pessoa that concerns his obsession with having multiple personalities. The album concludes with the fascinating “Sand Tar Man Star (For Aurellia)”: after opening with desolate mechanical clacking, it segues into more ghostly vocals before finishing with celestial-sounding electronics.
