Eluvium
Pianoworks
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Active since 2003, Portland, Oregon-based ambient/minimalist musician Matthew Cooper has had a prolific output of studio albums, splits and singles, with his Eluvium project garnering the most attention. Pianoworks – the tenth album under the Eluvium moniker – comes fifteen years after his previous solo piano album (and second album overall) An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death. Cooper painstakingly wrote, recorded and re-recorded the Pianoworks tracks multiple times to convey just the right mood: indeed, his work paid off with these simple-but-beautiful pieces inspired by childhood and the transition to adulthood. Opener “Recital” gently reminisces on children’s piano lessons, while the more morose “Soliloquy & Aside” feels particularly introspective.
