Code Orange Kids  Love Is Love // Return To Dust
(Deathwish)

Citing comparisons to Converge, Gallows and Ceremony (I’ll add American Nightmare, Weekend Nachos and Unsane as well,) this Pennsylvania band leans heavily toward the “hardcore” aspect of hardcore punk with sludge metal thrown in the mix too. Three of Code Orange Kids’ four members delivering most of the screamed vocals on these abruptly shifting songs, touching on themes of emptiness, drug abuse and death (from “Choices (Love Is Love)”: “there are no mistakes / only decisions.”) The shrieking and snarling guitars, concrete-thick bass and frantic drums make for some very un-relaxed listening, with speed ranging everywhere from blisteringly fast to crawlingly slow. Though the intensity often simulates that of a robotic beast charging and slamming you into grinding gears, there are a handful of beautiful moments: “Colors (Into Nothing)” and “Calm // Breathe” cool down the rage a bit with a contemplative sound reminiscent of post-rock and shoegaze, before shifting back into the extremity.

Vote NOW in the New Haven Advocate Readers’ Poll 2010

Every year, the New Haven Advocate does a Readers’ Poll. It’s going on right now. You can pick up an issue and fill out a ballot by hand or you can fill it out online by visiting New Haven Advocate 2010 Readers’ Poll Ballot.

You have to vote in at least 20 categories for your ballot to count. This can be difficult sometimes. Knowing that, here is what we voted for. Vote as you please, of course. We just happen to like these places.

It’s snowing out and this is one good way to make your time indoors productive today (we think so anyway). We’d surely appreciate your support. Thank you in advance to the best customers anywhere (way beyond just New Haven County, for sure).

New Haven Advocate Readers Poll 2009 Results

All is well with the world. We came in 2nd place for the category we most fit into (Music Shop essentially – that’s what we are after all). The more exciting thing to note is that we dominated the fun listings! Check the article out and read it in its entirety (it’s not very long). Get ready to learn what the best sidewalk is (I think you might be able to guess).

P.S. Big ups to Todd Rogers who is actually my favorite sign painter and not just everything else mentioned in this article. He did, after all, paint the Fuel coffee shop sign and some other place’s too. Oh yes, he painted our sign. You need a sign? Get Todd.
