Ormonde Machine

This indie-folk duo consists of Anna-Lynne Williams (best known as the singer-songwriter-guitarist for Trespassers William, as well as her solo project Lotte Kestner) and multi-instrumentalist Robert Gomez. They wrote this album while living together in a small adobe house in Texas, and the delicate, soft-spoken songs sound closely tied to that atmosphere. Elements such as an acoustic guitar, piano, organ and interestingly timed drum (almost like hip-hop at points) create an intimate atmosphere that feels like an introspective day exploring a quaint house and garden. One of the album’s loudest songs “Cherry Blossom” is a favorite, with dual vocals (particularly Gomez’s heavy whisper-like voice,) deep piano and a slowly chugging-along rhythm. Opener “I Can’t Imagine” is quieter but just as powerful, with Williams singing lyrics inspired by a fan who wrote to her about his time in the military – particularly the duty of moving dead bodies. Others that I really enjoyed are the drearily dreamy title track and the thoughtful, acoustic-and-piano driven “Sudden Bright,” using a very wide-open sound that was inspired by a news story about a nearby fire that burned acres of land: “we can watch the end of the world from here.”

Mark Lanegan Band Blues Funeral

Lanegan has been active since 1985, providing his uniquely weathered-sounding voice as a founding member of Screaming Trees before joining Queens Of The Stone Age in 2000 (other collaborations include work with The Twilight Singers, The Gutter Twins and Isobel Campbell.) It proves to be a vital asset on his seventh solo record, with his blues-rock truly sounding like it was inspired by living through some serious rough patches. His sad “ohhhh”-filled “Bleeding Muddy Water” is a great example of conveying bleakness through his unmistakable vocal talent. He throws in a good amount of musical variety to convey different types of sorrow and uncertainty, such as the rugged cement-truck build-up of the oddly romantic opener “The Gravedigger’s Song.” The perpetually-rocking “Riot In My House” is another standout, sounding like something straight out of the early 90s, complete with trippy imagery (“angels fill my room / with what I’ve scant belief in / when death’s metal broom / comes sweeping through the evening…”) “Ode To Sad Disco” is the record’s biggest surprise, incorporating an 80s-sounding electropop beat and synth that, backed by a guitar emoting along in the distance, really makes his crooning soar.

This week hit us a bit unexpected with some technical difficulties (PSA: Back up your hard drives often!). Unfortunately for us that means our inventory is a bit off. Luckily we were planning a full inventory project, but now it’s coming quicker than expected. This should effect all of y’all (our customers/friends) very little except for in this update there is no delineation between electronic, general pop & rock, hip-hop, etc. genres. Flying Lotus Until The Quiet Comes

Steven Ellison, better known as his stage name Flying Lotus, or FlyLo to his close fans, is a multi-genre music producer from Los Angeles California.  He has had 3 successful full length albums released under his title Flying Lotus.  For those of you that are unfamiliar with FlyLo, his albums are a type of experimental, jazz, electronic, dance, hip-hop.  He has the beats and bass of a hip hop artist but the tranquility, light chimes, and repetition of a jazz artist, along with electronic beats that have a haunting vibe to them.  His tracks have the feel of being in a dream land, with a hypnotic and trippy atmosphere.  This new album from FlyLo is not far off from his past albums, but it is finer tuned and more precise.   On this album there are also two special guests, including, Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke.  Every time I listen to a new FlyLo album I expect to be completely submerged and swept away by his beats, and he has successfully done this again.  When I first began listening to FlyLo I felt like if I closed my eyes I would wake up in the jungle in the dark running around with flashing colored lights everywhere and completely disoriented.  Sure enough while listening to this album I still feel the same way.  FlyLo’s haunting beats can also give off a “Twilight Zone” type of feel by being totally spacey and eccentric.  The Jazz aspects of this album are almost futuristic, such as if Jazz was being played by aliens this is what it would sound like (far fetched, I know).  However, if you want some funky dreams, the perfect album to fall asleep to would be Until The Quiet Comes.

Lightning Bolt Oblivion Hunter

Those with a taste for rock served artsy, slamming and outright loud should be familiar with this Providence, Rhode Island duo by now (and if not, now is the time.) Active for almost two decades now, Lightning Bolt has gained notoriety for their amplifier-exploding sound that bluntly unites “noise” and “rock” like few others. Brian Chippendale’s tireless drumming and uniquely echoing-in-another-dimension vocals set the foundation for Brian Gibson’s ultra-distorted bass guitar riffs, which range from being comfortably catchy to unbelievably dizzying. Their latest release (a “lost” recording from August 2008 that’s considered an EP, though it’s long enough to be a full-length) is a perfect summation of what one would expect a Lightning Bolt record to sound like. It strikes a balance between their early repetitious experimentation (such as their 1999 self-titled debut) and more critically appealing thick “rock” sound. They just sound really free throughout while exploring even more new structures. My favorites include the surprisingly foreboding opener “King Candy,” as well as those with instantly memorable fast-rocking riffs that’d fit perfectly on 2009’s Earthly Delights (such as “Oblivion Balloon” and “Salamander.”) Unsurprisingly, they threw in additional variety as well, with the curious Far East-sounding acoustic strumming of “The Soft Spoken Spectre” and 13-and-a-half noise-drenched minutes that make up the hallucinogenic outro “World Wobbly Wide.”

Susumu Yokota Dreamer

Since the early 90s, this English-speaking native of Japan has been composing and producing numerous albums of lush electronic ambience. His latest record is no different, kicking off with “Human Memory” endlessly pouring layers of synth upon a catchy retro-style breakbeat, along with horns that sound reminiscent of ancient times. The melding of electronic experimentation with Eastern music seems to be the running theme, from the sitar-soaked glimmer of “Flitting Ray,” and what sounds like monks chanting alongside bells in “Double Spot Image.” There’s no shortage of variation, with the driving techno of “Inception” just begging to complement a slick spy car on the move. The same style of deep synth is used on tracks that incorporate more experimental, difficult-to-describe backing sounds, such as “Animiam Of The Airy” and “Brainwashing And Senses,” while the particularly unique “Renounce The World” uses much more unusually-timed synth backed by chanting. Outro “Legendary Stream” is the most atmospheric of all, incorporating rich synth, flutes, running water and conversational speaking toward the end.

The xx Coexist

The XX, a band from England was first heard with their self titled debut album.  With their unique sound, the XX was able to introduce us to a different type of indie rock/pop music.  The XX uses their soft voices to speak words that are deep and meaningful to many who listen as well as their hypnotic beats.  There is a sense of space that is felt while listening to the XX, they have a great depth to their sound.  They evoke emotion with every chord change and are able to be extremely expressive.  This new album Coexist, is exactly what I would have expected from the XX.  Coexist is even more precise, refined and moving than their first album. They were able to create such delicate longing music, that while listening to the album everything else seems to fade away. The XX have the ability to create music that glistens right out of the speakers.  I find myself swaying my head to the dreamy sounds of this album.  Overall, XX, you done good and I cannot wait to see what else you come up with.

Hailing from San Francisco, this black metal four-piece sounds more unique than one may expect. The elements from the genre are there: the vocals sound like tormented screams, the drums range from machine gun-fast to crawling slow, and a downtempo mood lingers. However, as the label puts it, “punk and early ‘90s indie art rock” influences play a big role as well. The resulting sound is very thoughtful, with a greater emphasis on abstract melodies than brute force: the atmosphere feels more like that of pulling back together after a violent storm than enduring it as it happens. The lyrics, in particular, focus more on poetically telling stories than rhyming (for example, opener “The Arborist” describes a bizarre garden where people are placed in wells to meditate and eventually form bonds with their trees.) That track has some of the most prominent black metal speed and technique on the album, but it’s clear that more post rock-minded guitar chords are brewing underneath. The new style really comes into fruition on the next track “Desuetude,” with an ever-changing tempo and multiple passages, including guitars that sound like sun shining through the clouds. It reminds me of other “outsider black metal” like Liturgy if they focused more on a post-rock/progressive sound, with intensity taking a back seat. There are plenty of slow-simmered songs that work excellently, particularly with the beautiful first half of the ten-and-a-half minute “The God Ennui,” which eventually builds back to hyper-speed intensity.

Landing Landing

Formed in 1998, this New Haven-based trio provides Connecticut with an ethereal blend of genres such as Krautrock, shoegaze and space rock. After six years of working on their latest album, the culmination of effort has paid off.  The shimmering synth dreamscapes and ornate guitars make me feel like I’m drifting through memories of surreal places. Landing creates gorgeous, transcendent ambience excellently with their uniquely mixed sound that shouldn’t be relegated to a single genre. Right from the beginning, “Finally” builds a massive wall of electronic glow to back the calm vocals, brisk drums and spacey guitar sounds. Another instant standout, the faster-tempo “Heart Finds The Beat,” emphasizes on nebula-echoing bass, airy female vocals and numerous other reverb effects for an atmosphere to get lost in. One more I particularly enjoyed is the very warm-sounding closer “Native Land,” with numerous “ahhhh” vocals used as a multilayered instrument, reminding me of Sigur Rós. For maximum effect, this album should be played extra-loud.

Lee Ranaldo Between The Times & The Tides

Being one of Sonic Youth’s founding members, Ranaldo has taken a surprising turn on his latest album. It’s been promoted as his “first rock record,” which is fitting due to its pure, very accessible sound of… well, rock (specifically of the alternative/indie persuasion.) Even with the absence of avant-garde, he constructs downright great songs without abandoning his roots: his strong voice combined with his glowing guitar licks makes me imagine R.E.M. if they drew inspiration from Sonic Youth. The powerfully delivered seven-minute “Xtina As I Knew Her” serves as an excellent example of this: the somber, overcast atmosphere is crafted with layers of guitars that aren’t afraid to wander into a bit of controlled-yet-trippy dissonance. “Fire Island (Phases)” incorporates a huge variety of multi-tempo passages, drawing influences from not only Sonic Youth-style alt-rock, but also steel guitar-based country rock and 70s hard rock, among others. Another example of the steel guitar sounding refreshingly rich is on the longing acoustic ballad “Stranded,” with easily relatable lyrics (“I’ll be right there when you call / you know I love you best of all…”)

Matthew Dear Beams

Was born in Texas and moved to Michigan while he was a teenager.  In Michigan he was influenced by the Detroit Techno scene.  Dears style can be seen as glitch, techouse, and electronic avant- pop.  I believe Dears new album to have more of an electronic, indie, rock influence to it.  His newest album, Beams, has upbeat futuristic beats with dance floor ready tempos.  He companies his upbeat tempo and more than fun beats with his intense and deep lyrics that seem to be very personal to Dear.  This new album reminds me of a very upbeat and techno like TV on the Radio.  If TV on the radio was going to do a techno dance party on a spaceship, this is probably what it would sound like.  Dear’s music contradicts itself in many ways, which he believes to be his different personalities shining.  Dear’s music has changed very much throughout the years and this album is his most rock like album yet. Dear’s many personalities are seen as his “Beams”, hence the new album.  If you are ready to hop on the futuristic dance floor then Beams is a perfect album for you.

Jeff Loomis Plains of Oblivion

Best known for being the lead guitarist of the progressive/thrash/neo-classical metal band Nevermore, Loomis further demonstrates his incredibly advanced techniques on his second solo record. Like one would expect from him, he manages to pull off an epic scope with a combination of white-hot shredding and soaring licks to craft songs that really feel like they’re telling a story (opener “Mercurial” sets the mood excellently by employing both aforementioned elements.) The lightning-speed “Escape Velocity” is another favorite, with several blasting breakdowns to punctuate the face-melting guitar chords. The acoustic, medieval-sounding “Rapture” demonstrates his flexibility well, with an array of complex string techniques. Loomis didn’t accomplish this all alone, though: he features an impressive roster of guest guitarists for solos as well, including Attila Vörös from Hungary (“Requiem For The Living”) and Tony MacAlpine from the U.S. (“The Ultimatum”), as well as ex-Megadeth members Marty Friedman (“Mercurial”) and Chris Poland (“Continuum Drift.”) Though most of the tracks are instrumental, he also invites guest vocals from Christine Rhoades (“Tragedy And Harmony” and “Chosen Time”) and Insahn (“Surrender”) to further punctuate the feeling.

Mono For My Parents

Mono is a band from Japan that has been experimenting with post- rock/instrumental rock since 1999.  Mono is made up of electronics, strings, chorus, a pianist, and a saxophonist.  This new album by Mono reminds me of a much calmer more fine tuned Explosions in the Sky. Not to get confused that they are any better or worse than Explosions.  Mono’s instruments are just timed more particularly then that of Explosions and other Instrumental bands.  They are precise with their execution and because of this great harmonization the band sounds like a Japanese symphony.  While listening to the album I felt myself placing Mono in either a symphony hall or in a grungy rock hall.  Mono has moved into a brighter territory of music that is uplifting with their triumphant climaxes.  Their eruption of noise is much more tamed then past albums.  While listening to the album I felt as though I was watching a Japanese War movie (in slow motion).  The guitars feel as though they are melting out of the speakers and pouring into my ears. The album makes for a musically emotional roller coaster.  The light guitar repetitions along with the bombastic drums erupts into an uplifting climax in every song which makes the album somewhat soundtrack like.  This would be a perfect album to listen to on a long train ride home.

Porcelain Raft Strange Weekend

Rome-born and NYC-based Mauro Remiddi is a composer, songwriter and musician: after a 2010 EP, this is the first full-length from his current project. Although his original band, Sunny Day Sets Fire, focused on indie-pop, Porcelain Raft is all about dreamy, atmospheric electropop. His warm, ethereal and lo-fi sound can be attributed to a combination of his wistful, echoed vocals with a varied, driving drum machine, bright-sounding acoustic/electric guitars and a generous helping of sensual synth. The end result sounds quite refreshingly natural, which isn’t an easy feat for an album based mainly on numerous electronic effects. My favorites include the twinkling opener “Drifting In And Out,” with a head-bobbing rhythm to complement the shimmering, descending synth notes. “Unless You Speak From Your Heart” takes a similar kind of drum pattern, with a greater focus on an easily memorable melody. Acoustic-based “Picture” is another unique standout, with the sunny guitar backed by a chunky hip-hop sounding beat.
