Nate Hall A Great River

(Neurot)
This solo debut serves as a bit of a departure from the psych rock/sludge metal hybrid that Hall sings and plays in the North Carolina-based band U.S. Christmas. It’s not a complete change, though, as he focuses on a stripped-down version the expansive folk-rock that he also showcases with the band. Both intimate acoustic and soaring electric guitars play roles in the grandeur of his rustic soundscapes, with opener “The Earth In One Cell” serving as a great example. His dark, introspective lyrics focus primarily on nature metaphor-fueled life observations, including the emotions experienced as a musician wandering the world (“Raw Chords”) Tracks 4 and 8 demonstrate the most dramatic comparison with two versions of an instrumental called “Night Theme;” a pensive, somber acoustic one and a druggy, dream-like electric one.

Peace The World Is Too Much With Us

(Suicide Squeeze)
On their sophomore record, this Vancouver post-punk band sounds focused and energetic amidst Dan Geddes’ yearning, spoke-sung vocals, similar to The Fall. It kicks off with the very sunny-sounding “Your Hand in Mine,” fueled by upbeat drumming and triumphant, satisfied delivery of the song’s title. The other songs share the same tireless, enthusiastic flow, such as “The Perp Walk,” sung in a cool-sounding, detached way (I’ve lived all my life / now it’s gone…”) The bass plays a noticeably heavy role toward the end, particularly when it sets the foundation for the noisily epic “Winterhouse” and very sinister, rising-like-smoke “Free Time.” Another standout – “Black Cocaine” – features vocals that sound particularly close to an old-school post-punk revival, even when they consist of little more than the title repeated.
[Reviewer: Mark]

U.S. Girls GEM

(FatCat)
Despite this glitzy glam-pop project’s plural, American-sounding name, Toronto-born Meghan Remy is essentially the sole member, taking command with her striking, high-pitched singing voice. On her fourth album, she clearly demonstrates her interest in the music of both indie rock and girl groups, creating what sounds like a curious re-imagining of the emotions experienced while living the high life. The sound mostly has a somewhat dark aura throughout, kicking off with the cavernous, synth-driven “Another Color,” showcasing her loud, emotional and echoed voice. The driving, ever-bedazzled “Work From Home” is a unique standout in its memorable simplicity; after it ends, it jumps into a cover of Brock Robinson’s “Jack,” which is likely the most cool-flowing, head-bobbing song about Jack the Ripper to exist. Remy shows her versatility by tackling country-rock as well, successfully putting an interesting spin on Billy Joe Royal’s “Down In The Boondocks.”

Youth Lagoon Wondrous Bughouse

(Fat Possum)
On his sophomore record, Boise-raised Trevor Powers once again sounds far removed from a state associated with potato fields: this time, his fuzzy, blissful and psychedelic dream-pop sounds much more colorful and busy than the mellowed-out, watching-the-clouds-go-by fantasy realm that was 2011’s The Year of Hibernation. First single “Dropla,” for example, goes straight to the playful hook and Powers’ uniquely precocious voice, repeating “you’ll never die” like a child not yet bruised by the harsh realities of life. My favorite is easily the epic five-minute “Pelican Man,” using synth, piano and drums to take off and soar with curious lyrics apparently about being haunted by past mistakes. He again uses an out-of-tune-sounding piano to its full potential in “Attic Doctor,” creating what sounds like a summer-night waltz in Toyland. It’s great that he was smart enough to expand on his sound instead of choosing to make the same thing again.

Slug Guts Playin’ in Time With the Deadbeat

(Sacred Bones)
This Australian sextet showcases a harsh, fried-out post-punk/noise-rock sound on their third album, particularly shaped by a brutal year of arrests, violence and death while on tour. Their harsh, echoed-out sound is drawn from fellow Aussie post-punk bands like The Birthday Party and feedtime, with opening track “Scum” sounding like a midnight surf jam in a rough part of town, haunted by wailing sax spirits dropping by unexpectedly. Others such as the rough pounding “Black Sports” and spooky, creeping title track further help progress the grimy-alleyway atmosphere at an exclamatory volume.

Spazz Dwarf Jester Rising [Reissue]

(625 Thrash)
This re-press completes a recent trilogy of Spazz reissues, which started with 1999’s Crush Kill Destroy and then 1997’s La Revancha.  On their 1994 debut full-length, this influential California powerviolence band expectedly showcases their most raw sound (which is, of course, exactly how a hybrid of punk and grindcore should sound.) They maintained a consistent sound throughout their discography, perfecting it to become powerviolence’s most-imitated band: machine-gun drumming, monolithic bass, buzzing guitar and multiple shouted vocals. It also showcases their simultaneously well-written and furious lyrics from the start, with a primary running theme stressing the importance of thinking for one’s self and questioning societal norms. Awesome.
[Reviewer: Mark]

Megafaun Megafaun

(Hometapes)
On their fourth full-length, this North Carolina-based psych-folk trio plays through a wide tapestry of sound for over an hour. A very laid-back sound dominates the experience, with mellow acoustic instruments and vocals reminiscent of country – particularly on tracks such as opener “Real Slow” and “You Are The Light.” However, they also throw in some unique variety by alternating with several other songs that truly fit the “freak folk” label. The tracks that stand out the most with that quality include the jovial extraterrestrial carnival transitioning into a brief epic in “Serene Return” and the metallic drone/rustic guitar hybrid of “Postscript.” It’s certainly an interesting concoction of both the familiar and the otherworldly.
