Atoms For Peace Amok

(XL)
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke formed the Los Angeles supergroup Atoms For Peace back in late 2009. He sings and plays both guitar and piano: the other members include Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on bass, Radiohead producer Nigel Goodrich on synths and keyboards, Beck and R.E.M.’s Joey Waronker on drums and Brazilian Mauro Refosco on percussion. The group’s February 25 debut album Amok sounds more accessible than Yorke’s 2006 solo effort The Eraser: the intricately clicking, minimalist electronic arrangements are most reminiscent of that album’s singles  “Analyse” and “Harrowdown Hill.” Flea’s bass weaves surprisingly smoothly in the mix, sounding funky in a way that’s way more intricate than screamingly colorful. My favorite tracks include the darkly minimalist computer-blip-into-sunset-swell “Default” and the haunting, kinetic “Judge, Jury and Executioner.” More highlights for me include the lively electronic rainforest atmosphere of “Ingenue” and the juxtaposition of energetic percussion atop the stark funereal synth of “Unless.” Overall, this album is a promising sign for things to come from this project: experimental electronic rock that’s easy to get hooked on.
[Reviewer: Mark] [Note: We’re currently out of stock of the LPs, but expect to have some in mid-week.]

The Manic Low Songs For An Up Day

(Moonlight Graham)
This is certainly an unexpected project from Jack Grisham, who’s best known as a punk vocalist (T.S.O.L., The Joykiller, etc.) Here, he’s impressively skilled at nailing what reminds me of an 80s/90s pop-rock sound, conjuring memories of acts like The Romantics, Counting Crows and Barenaked Ladies. Grisham’s upbeat, well-rounded tunes use layers such as an acoustic guitar, organ and horns to make them even more memorable. The primary theme throughout is love and relationships, with my favorites including the twangy “Good Girls Come Home,” which uses some speedy vocals that reminded me of Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as the flying “Let Me Come Up,” exploring a relationship in which both he and she are “crazy,” but she wants babies and he wants love. An album this lively sounding should appeal to a large audience.

Dots Will Echo Drunk Is The New Sober / Stupid Is The New Dumb

(Asthmatic Kitty)
Formed over 20 years ago and having released albums in 1991 and 1996, this New Jersey duo consists of multi-instrumentalist Nick Berry and drummer Kurt Biroc, both singing and playing a style that’s not easily defined. Essentially it’s a sentimental, sloppy-yet-endearing sound that combines folk, country and indie rock, creating the atmosphere of a rustic, laid-back celebration with close friends. On this double-album, I enjoyed the slyly funky “Shitstorm” and “Seven Deadly Sins” a lot, as well as others like the acoustic “I’m A Monkey” and electric-rocking “Rocket Girls,” with spirited choruses that subconsciously beg for audience members to join in. More standouts include warm ballads such as “Peace In Your Life” and “Be A Friend,” using a violin to bring a nostalgic country sound together.

Nude Beach  II

(Other Music)

Nude Beach is a Brooklyn-based trio specializing in a mix of straight-up rock ‘n’ roll, power pop and surf rock. Vocalist/guitarist/pianist/organist Chuck Betz, drummer/vocalist/percussionist Ryan Naideau and bassist Jimmy Shelton started out playing punk music back in their high school days living in Northport, New York. Since the formation of this current project in 2008, they’ve played a major role in their borough’s DIY scene; they’ve played in lofts and bars, self-financed releases and tours, and had numerous side-projects. On their sophomore full-length (written by Betz and re-pressed on the Other Music label after the original run of 500 sold out,) they dish out more nostalgic ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s-inspired summer-day-and-night rock, mostly dwelling on (expectedly) romantic themes. This album isn’t revolutionary or deeply philosophical, but it doesn’t need to be: it’s simply ten guitar-oriented feel-good songs drawing from artists (Tom Petty, The Replacements, etc.) and styles (roots, punk, etc.) that many people are familiar with, and the result works very well. My favorite tracks include the invigorating surf-tinged opener “Radio,” the moonlit-sounding ‘50s-style anthem “Keep It Cool” and the crooning thrill-ride “Cathedral Echoes.”

Wires Under Tension Replicant

(Western Vinyl)

This is the second album from this Bronx-based instrumental/experimental post-rock duo. Their innovative music could be a soundtrack for adventuring through a city of the future: Theo Metz drums the foundation for Christopher Tignor’s numerously layered synth and multi-instrumental loops, creating a sound reminiscent of Battles and Tortoise. It’s the kind of soundscapes that are fun to get lost in, particularly when they build to an epic grandeur, such as the orchestral swells in “Shoot Between Heartbeats” and “Crystal Beaches.” Tignor’s horns and violin go a long way to making the songs sound emotional and poetic. Variety is a major strength on songs like the seven-and-a-half minute “The Light Behind You Is Changing,” which goes from a reverb-ing guitar to horns, an organ and what sounds like an old-school video game backing it. It’s quite a trip.

The Bronx The Bronx (IV)

(ATO)
On the fourth album to spawn from their ten-year-plus existence, this Los Angeles hardcore punk band achieves a great balance between rocking out furiously and crafting hook-laden riffs. Vocalist Matt Caughthran’s melodic screaming once again drives the buzzing guitar and enlivening drums, with more of an emphasis on being insightful than viciously brazen. For example, roaring opener “The Unholy Hand” tackles the issue of conformity versus popularity; the latter of which carries the possibility of being “the Antichrist or the Holy Ghost.” Compared to the dark nature of their earlier material, the sound here gives off a much brighter vibe, even making a police interrogation into a soaring anthem (“Ribcage.”) The slower moments include having no regrets of living a “Life Less Ordinary” and inevitably passing life’s “Torches” to future generations. It’s always great when maturation doesn’t cost a band their rock-out ability.

Foxygen We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic

(Jagjaguwar)
On their second album, this California-based experimental indie duo continues the 60s and 70s-influenced psychedelic trip of previous effort Take The Kids Off Broadway, but in a more focused way. For example, the easygoing folk/blues hybrid “No Destruction” sounds like a synthesis of Stealers Wheel, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. It’s not a case of “ripping off” anyone; rather, just like those influences, Foxygen does a great job of building on the past to construct a newly effective sound. A good example is the epic Stones/Lou Reed-influenced “On Blue Mountain,” which memorably uses a brooding organ, chiming piano and cymbal-crashing drum to flourish at the chorus. The infectiously driving, enchanted-sounding “San Francisco” is an easy standout as well, with wistfully nostalgic vocals about leaving love in the city, with a female voice responding that “it’s okay” because she was “bored anyway” and “born in L.A.”  The Kinks/Gorillaz/Blur-style “Shuggie” is compelling as well, cruising along broken-heartedly with a swelling chorus kicking in at just the right times.

San Cisco Awkward

(Fat Possum)
This young indie-pop quartet formed in Fremantle, Western Australia in 2009, originally called “King George” before settling on the current name (unrelated to the city of San Francisco.) Their second EP kicks off with the extra-peppy titular track, with happy male-and-female “da-da-da’s” underscoring lyrics alternating between both genders’ perspectives of an uneasy, technology-driven relationship. Youthful love is the running theme, including unexplainable infatuation in the glimmering “Golden Revolver,” the role of lying in the summery “Girls Do Cry,” and the closing track’s somber, beautiful reflection on the pain caused by being “Reckless.” Their fresh, lively and poppy sound will likely bring them a wide audience.
