Burnt Books Burnt Books
(At a Loss)
This Columbia, South Carolina-based experimental hardcore punk band came into being in October 2011, formed by members from other wild bands like Guyana Punch Line, Thank God, .fuckingcom and Tunguska. Their heavy, angular music blazes along with elements of noise-rock and avant-garde punk, reminding me of bands like Some Girls (the Californian one,) Blood Brothers and Converge. The most unexpected tracks are the stripped-down “Materialist Conspiracy Theorist” and “Liar,” consisting of Zoe Lollis providing just her voice and a banjo: though I don’t usually associate the instrument with serious matters, it complements her emotional balladry well.
Hollis Brown Ride On The Train
(Alive)
With their name borrowed from a Bob Dylan song, this New York-based quartet should appeal to a wide, multi-generational audience on their full-length debut. Their slightly bluesy brand of rock is seeped in Americana, classic pop and rock n’ roll, sounding confident, lively and inspired. The opening title track sets a great mood with its melodic structure and appropriately chugging-along energy as the chorus swells in. “Doghouse Blues” provides, unsurprisingly, the purest slow-burn back-to-roots blues wail, which gets coupled with faster rock elements on the rugged “Walk On Water” as lead singer Mike Montali warns that if you do “walk on water, you’d better be willing to drown.” The lighter, sunnier tracks like “When The Weather’s Warm” and “Faith & Love” help the album feel well rounded.
Spike Priggen The Very Thing That You Treasure
(Volare)
On his first solo effort, this singer-songwriter-guitarist flourished with bright, country-tinged power pop/rock throughout. Even with melancholy romantic themes throughout (through laments such as “She Used to Be My Baby” and “”Listening To Me,”) it’s hard to feel down as Priggen belts out his heartfelt emotions amidst rich arrangements. My favorites are the fast-paced rockers such as “Yesterday” and “What Yer Missing,” reminding me of Cheap Trick’s energy and The Cars’ keyboards.
