Mark McGuire Along The Way
(Dead Oceans)
A former member of the now-defunct Ohio ambient trio Emeralds, Mark McGuire has put out a third solo album that again demonstrates a mystical journey. The hour-plus Along The Way is a complexly structure but relaxing web of primarily acoustic and electric guitars, along with piano, synth, percussion and vocals for what feels like a electronic stroll through Japanese countryside. One particularly unique song is the personal ballad “The Human Condition (Song For My Father),” featuring camcorder audio from a 1989 “roast” of McGuire’s father.

Half-handed Cloud Flying Scroll Flight Control
(Asthmatic Kitty)
An occasional collaborator with Sufjan Stevens (who provided backing vocals on this record), John Ringhofer is the core member of the Berkeley, California-based Half-handed Cloud. I wasn’t sure what to expect when this album was described as having “Dada interior-architectural songs” with influences including “Stan Brakhage’s domestic/personal 1960s art films” and “Mister Rogers’ avant-garde children’s operas,” but the resulting music is friendly and joyous indie-pop. Ringhofer uses everything from choirs to piano, guitar, trombone and organ throughout his songs, with the curiously catchy result sounding like an experimental indie-rock twist on a Jesus-praising summer camp.
