Out and About: WESU Record Fair, Youth of Today, Salvation…

Out and About:
WESU Record Fair, Youth of Today, Salvation…

Connecticut has a lot going on this weekend. Here are three things that we will most definitely be in attendance for.

1. WESU Fall Record Fair (Facebook Event). Last year we scored a ton of great stuff for way cheap! Sean got a a copy of Botch “We Are The Romans” LP /300 for $30, that’s a steal! We’ll have a couple of tables of stuff from our store set up along with 17 other dealers. The Hartford Area Roller Derby girls will be selling baked goods as well. Get sugared up and dig hard. There will be a couple food trucks outside too. This fair is FREE. 11AM – 4PM. Saturday, November 12th Beckham Hall Wyllys Avenue, Wesleyan University Campus Middletown, CT.

2. After the record fair, we’ll be heading down to The El’N’Gee in New London, CT to catch a performance by legendary Connecticut natives, Youth Of Today. This show is brought to us by Brass City Boss Sounds, so head over to their site and secure your ticket to move up front and shout out loud.

The last time I saw YOT was 1999. They played a reunion show in Wallingford. It was originally supposed to be at the Extreme Skatepark, but it got moved to the Polish Club down the street. I’m glad it did because the floor of the 4th floor warehouse the skatepark was in would have absolutely caved in. At that time, Jamey (Hatebreed, Stillborn, Jasta) had a small record store called Subterranean in the center of town. The day of the show, a bunch of local kids got recruited to help out. I got left at the shop by myself. No one gave me the key to take the security cases off of CDs, so I was cutting them out with pliers. People from all over the world flew in for that show and had to come to Subterranean to pick up their tickets. I have a really vivid memory of trying to explain to some nice European dudes that I couldn’t take purple money.

When I arrived at the show that night, I remember the hall was packed super tight and it felt like it took forever from the time the doors opened to when Right Brigade started that night. As soon as the feedback started in, the floor opened up wide. Dudes were moshing so hard, the floor boards were bouncing up and down and I could barely stay on my own two feet, let alone defend myself from getting hit. I made my way to the side of the stage and managed to watch the rest of the show from the speaker stacks. Youth Of Today was amazing that night. I can’t put the vibe of their set into words.

Do not miss this opportunity to catch them live!

3. Sunday brings us a night of brutal hardcore rituals by Salvation (Youth Attack), Hoax (Youth Attack) & Brass Caskets will be taking place in a secret location (Facebook Event). To be guided to the show, meet at Redscroll. We’ll show you the way.

Laugh It Off (Square of Opp 38 or 39 probably)
Hailing mostly from Philadelphia PA by way of the Lehigh Valley comes your new favorite poppy hardcore wrecking crew. They have been compared to early Saves The Day and other good sounding music. Ex members of Yo Man Go, Hypatia, Robot Attack, Government Satire, Audioheart, Paramedic….. I could keep going…. but i won’t. The most electrifying band in fun hardcore today. I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!

Live Music: Integrity

Live Music: INTEGRITY
[Josh and his Integrity collection]
It’s no secret to anyone who knows me (Josh) that one of my all time favorite bands is Integrity. I have a large Integrity record collection (pictured).  I have an Integrity related tattoo.  Integrity’s music is the perfect blend of sick riffs, dark introspective lyrics, ridiculous legendary hardcore folklore, and cult mysticism. I even love the weird experimental industrial phase.

The lineup changes have haunted Integrity just as hard as any band that has been together for over 20 years, if not harder. But if you’re the type of person who thinks that anything Integ without the Melnicks’ is bullshit, you’re just a jaded old fart or a person who wants to give off the vibe that they are. Dwid has shrouded himself and the brand with the finest musicians and it shows on newer releases like “The Blackest Curse” and “Detonate VVorlds Plague”, which compiles all of the recent 7” material on one LP.

Thanks to the great people at Brass City Boss Sounds, I have the chance to see another rare Integrity performance, which is this coming Saturday, October 1st right here in Connecticut at the El N Gee (Facebook Event Page), which is the same venue they last performed at in CT back in 2005. It’s absolutely crucial that you buy an advanced ticket to this. It will sell out!

Some other highlights on this lineup include All Pigs Must Die who feature members of The Hope Conspiracy and Converge, Salvation (Youth Attack Records / Secret Shows) and Shoot To Kill who are probably the most criminally underrated band in the North East.
I also took this opportunity to take some new photos of my  personal Integrity collection since there have been some finds, trades, re-releases and new releases since I last have. Enjoy!
[Please note that if the record is still in the sleeve it’s on black vinyl. All doubles were omitted for the sake of being redundant.]

[I’m also looking to sell this for $60.]

CANCELLED: Sunday Benefit: CHIP!

Mother Nature is cruel. Well, she is at least ambivalent. And she’s bringing the wrath this weekend. The Governor has already declared a state of emergency for Connecticut on Sunday. So, yes, the Benefit event for Matthew “Chip” Crane is cancelled. That doesn’t mean we can’t still raise money for him. We will. We have raffle prizes and a karaoke machine (which unless we figure out something for Monday may sadly go unused). Stay tuned. We’ll send a message out through all the channels (blogs, facebook, twitter).

Thanks to all who planned on attending and we hope you’ll keep an eye out for the future effort on this.

_____________________________________________________
A few months back Matthew “Chip” Crane was on a fire escape when it collapsed. He landed on his feet and shattered his heels. This is a benefit to lift his spirits and to try and help with the financial burden that comes along with an accident like this. Matthew has played with seminal CT bands; such as Fired Up, Tombstone Minds and Estrogen Highs.

Chip on drums:
A cursory search didn’t turn up any footage of Chip playing bass in Fired Up, but here’s a song and the cover art (Chip is all the way on the right of the cover):
Couldn’t find any Tombstone Minds footage either. Come see this guy in the flesh and forget the videos. I guarantee he’ll be doing Karaoke which is more entertaining than most things in life anyhow. Get ready for fun while helping a friend (whether he’s yours now or soon to be).
