The Bronx The Bronx (IV)

On the fourth album to spawn from their ten-year-plus existence, this Los Angeles hardcore punk band achieves a great balance between rocking out furiously and crafting hook-laden riffs. Vocalist Matt Caughthran’s melodic screaming once again drives the buzzing guitar and enlivening drums, with more of an emphasis on being insightful than viciously brazen. For example, roaring opener “The Unholy Hand” tackles the issue of conformity versus popularity; the latter of which carries the possibility of being “the Antichrist or the Holy Ghost.” Compared to the dark nature of their earlier material, the sound here gives off a much brighter vibe, even making a police interrogation into a soaring anthem (“Ribcage.”) The slower moments include having no regrets of living a “Life Less Ordinary” and inevitably passing life’s “Torches” to future generations. It’s always great when maturation doesn’t cost a band their rock-out ability.

Foxygen We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic

On their second album, this California-based experimental indie duo continues the 60s and 70s-influenced psychedelic trip of previous effort Take The Kids Off Broadway, but in a more focused way. For example, the easygoing folk/blues hybrid “No Destruction” sounds like a synthesis of Stealers Wheel, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. It’s not a case of “ripping off” anyone; rather, just like those influences, Foxygen does a great job of building on the past to construct a newly effective sound. A good example is the epic Stones/Lou Reed-influenced “On Blue Mountain,” which memorably uses a brooding organ, chiming piano and cymbal-crashing drum to flourish at the chorus. The infectiously driving, enchanted-sounding “San Francisco” is an easy standout as well, with wistfully nostalgic vocals about leaving love in the city, with a female voice responding that “it’s okay” because she was “bored anyway” and “born in L.A.”  The Kinks/Gorillaz/Blur-style “Shuggie” is compelling as well, cruising along broken-heartedly with a swelling chorus kicking in at just the right times.

San Cisco Awkward

This young indie-pop quartet formed in Fremantle, Western Australia in 2009, originally called “King George” before settling on the current name (unrelated to the city of San Francisco.) Their second EP kicks off with the extra-peppy titular track, with happy male-and-female “da-da-da’s” underscoring lyrics alternating between both genders’ perspectives of an uneasy, technology-driven relationship. Youthful love is the running theme, including unexplainable infatuation in the glimmering “Golden Revolver,” the role of lying in the summery “Girls Do Cry,” and the closing track’s somber, beautiful reflection on the pain caused by being “Reckless.” Their fresh, lively and poppy sound will likely bring them a wide audience.

Brass Caskets / Cold Snap

This split seven-inch brings together two furious, up-and-coming hardcore bands from Connecticut. Both roar with elements of noise rock and post-hardcore, but each side’s unique aspects (not just musically, but lyrically as well) stand out the best. The four-piece Brass Caskets remind me the most of Refused, tackling issues involving government corruption, surveillance, secrets and truth suppression. Most importantly, the lyrics serve as a call to action to take the torch and continue questioning those in power, should anything unfortunate happen to the writer. Cold Snap is more abstract, using a spacey, noisy and drugged-out sound (reminding me more of Unsane) with lyrics filled with metaphors and poetic imagery. The themes include questioning one’s self and what sounds like a severely difficult relationship (“I am nothing but a splinter / under the skin of your existence.”) Both bands’ styles make this split an easy recommendation to anyone who likes hardcore.

Taken by Trees Other Worlds

Originally the lead singer for Swedish indie-pop octet The Concretes, Victoria Bergsman has been releasing albums for this solo experimental pop project since 2006. Upon listening to her third album, it’s not the least bit surprising that it was inspired by time spent in Hawaii: she uses a smooth-sounding mix of tropical instrumentation for this very laid-back sounding indie pop/world music experience. It feels like a summer spent relaxing on beaches and in rainforests, drifting through semi-conscious observations of places far from the urbanized world. Bergsman utilizes sliding steel guitars and percussion that ranges from punching and resonant to organic to straight-up steel drums (“Pacific Blue” is an excellent example of such, fusing ethereal pop with traditional island music.) Reggae fits the mix well, whether as a light, sporadic element (“Highest High”) or the complete, piano-based focus (“I Want You.”) It sounds especially interesting delivered with Bergsman’s otherworldly, layered voice.

Bad Religion True North

These guys need no introduction, but here’s one anyway: formed in Los Angeles as a hardcore punk band over 30 years ago, Bad Religion has become one of the most influential and respected punk bands around. Their sound has evolved from gritty hardcore to soaring melodic punk, without losing any of their grip of socially conscious lyricism and fury. Most impressively, their sixteenth studio album True North further proves that they remain experts at conveying their messages with still-fresh-sounding punk anthems. The themes include battling despair through life’s struggles (the title track, “Hello Cruel World,” “Nothing to Dismay”) and greed in both religious institutions (“Robin Hood in Reverse”) and big business (“Land of Endless Greed.”) Even with such bleak subject matter, they maturely offer a message of hope, suggesting that it’s best to “focus on tomorrow” (“Past is Dead”) and “lend a helping hand” to your fellow person in a seemingly hopeless world (“Dept. of False Hope.”) When it comes to the past being dead, though, that thankfully doesn’t refer to them abandoning their raw roots entirely, with a particularly memorable ode to a phrase that any dissenter – with or without a Ph.D. – can use to quickly get a point across: “Fuck You.”

Ultraísta Ultraísta

Sometimes called Radiohead’s “sixth member” for his production work with the band (as well as being a multi-instrumental member of Thom Yorke’s side-project Atoms for Peace,) Nigel Godrich further showcases his synth skills as part of this new Afrobeat-influenced electro-dance trio. Fellow producer Joey Waronker takes control of the highly kinetic, catchy drums while Parisian vocalist/fine artist Laura Bettinson lends her longingly affectionate and frequently multi-layered voice. Their infectious music sounds very lively throughout, like a pulsating Krautrock sun endless shifting the mood over a tribal dance circle, with the participants motioning you to join in. My favorites included the shining, fittingly hook-laden opener “Bad Insect” as well as the thoughtful, interestingly romantic “Our Song” and surprisingly downtempo, minimal piano-driven “Party Line.”

Starring ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ

Describing their sound as “sparkle prog,” “sleepy core” and “kraut punk,” this Brooklyn five-piece (formed in 2008) takes experimental prog/punk to thrilling new levels. I can imagine it being the score for an art film about an apocalyptic circus: opener “the best” utilizes absolutely manic drumming, psyched-out guitar landscapes and a very diverse mix of colorful synth. Front-woman Clara Hunter’s ominously echoing, poetic vocals bring the sound together, with the next track “ie” focuses on loose, more jazz-like instrumentation atop a buzzing synth and fast drumming foundation. The third track proves to be the most relaxing, alternating between a flowery 60s-style electric organ pattern and breaks of gorgeous singing over a low-key guitar. They further demonstrate their diverse tastes on the epic “…7…,” which begins with guitars giving way to Middle Eastern-sounding orchestration, then flourishing into the loudly-rocking guitar, synth, drums and – eventually – Hunter’s luminous vocals. It’s certainly one of the most unique albums that I’ve heard in a while, particularly for its thrill-ride moments.

Matthew E. White Big Inner

Born in Virginia and raised both there and in Manila, Philippines, White’s warm, laid-back indie-folk music sounds much more deeply rooted in the former.  On “One Of These Days,” he calmly croons his romantic reflections to the listener amidst an easy-going tempo of simply a guitar and drum, which soon gives way to blossoming strings, horns and a choir. The next track is my favorite: “Big Love” surprised me by starting with an Air-like rumbling bassline and piano before the catchy chorus and increasingly busy (including backing gospel-like vocals, congas and a saxophone) bring it to its climax. White explores religious themes without sounding polarizing or heavy-handed; in the closer “Brazos,” his repeated statements about Jesus being our Lord and friend could be interpreted in several different ways, but on “Gone Away,” he’s certainly sincere about respectfully asking his young cousin why he had to go up to Heaven too early. White has an open-minded perspective on both the rewards and challenges of life, and it’s refreshing to hear him convey it.

Moebius + Tietchens Moebius + Tietchens

This abstract record is a collaborative work from two veterans of the German avant-garde electronic scene: they began their careers in 1970 and 1979, respectively. Born in Switzerland in 1944, Dieter Moebius has had numerous collaborative projects, such as Kluster with Conrad Schnitzler (renamed Cluster after Schnitzler left) and Harmonia with Michael Rother (both projects also featured Hans-Joachim Roedelius.) Asmus Tietchens – born in Germany in 1947 – has mainly worked solo, starting with musique concrète and later specializing in abstract sound collages. This is the first collaboration between the two men in 32 years, and it’s clear that they haven’t lost their talent for creating obtuse mechanical worlds. One of the shortest tracks – the two-and-a-half minute “Cremon” – kicks the album off with an intimidating atmosphere, sounding like the score for a massive, sprawling, abandoned factory wasteland. It transitions into the nearly 10-minute “Kattrepel,” primarily composed of ever-chugging bass punctuated by an extremely high-frequency tone. Later in the album, ten-and-a-half-minute “Lange Reihe” sounds like a bicycle ride with several alien insects dropping by. “Grimm” is one of my favorites for its busy atmosphere of multi-colored darkness, with buzzes and a fractured melody built on the infectious beat.

OMBRE Believe You Me

Already established for their solo work, duo Helado Negro and Julianna Barwick have only known each other since 2009, but they already know how to create a wide-open sound that, at the very least, combines elements of Latin music and dream pop. On their debut together, Barwick’s harmonious, multi-layered vocals create the perfect ethereal ambience alongside Negro’s psych-folk instrumentation. A great demonstration of this is the first single “Cara Falsa,” which uses a tribal-sounding drum pattern, vibrantly warm synth and angelic vocals to sound like an endless sky over a peaceful desert. The two-part “Noche Brilla” opens and closes the album, with the first part using a guitar and horn to underscore Barwick’s heavenly vocals, while the second part is a straightforward acoustic ballad with the same voice – still ethereal – singing poetically romantic lyrics. One unique track, “Weight Those Words” relies on a tight, cozy acoustic sound with vocals from both: Negro’s traditional, down-to-earth Latin singing with Barwick’s distant “ahhh” voice chiming from above. Her circling voice also helps the piano-loop-based “Sense” come into fruition as pure otherworldly beauty.
