Trash Talk has a new album on the Odd Future label that came out Tuesday on CD (we’ll have it in tomorrow) and it will be out on LP next month. This short feature (about 7 minutes) captures the general spirit of the band and even has some of their music in it – get trash’d! (It’s more fun to use apostrophes than the letter “e.”)

Evan Weiss is the mastermind behind Into It. Over It., a project spawned from the idea of writing one song a week for an entire year. He’s also a long time friend of the shop. Evan will be hitting the road soon with a full band this time, making an appearance in Hartford w/ Hostage Calm, Make Do And Mend, The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die, & Slingshot Dakota. Check out this video released yesterday for, “Embracing Facts”, a song off 2011’s “Proper.”

Hey y’all, Caren here. I’ll be filling in here at the shop for the remainder of the weekend. Redscroll Records gets a ton of rad represses and reissues in here daily, but I’ve been most excited to get my hands on a copy of Lungfish‘s “Talking Songs For Walking.” After being out of print for quite a while, Dischord Records recently remastered and repressed this amazing record, and we have it here now.

the Mountain Goats have a new album out. This is a new video for a song from that. Arrangements in Americana. I like to follow John Darnielle on twitter because he says funny things. (Sean)

Cult of Youth have a new video for a song off their latest LP offering from Sacred Bones Records. It’s a lovely dark folk song with imagery that lines up well with its sounds. They’re also starting a tour tonight in Boston and will be in NYC tomorrow with SLUG GUTS who just played in Hartford on Sunday.

The BESTIAL MOUTHS release on Dais Records last year was one of my favorites of 2011. This new single has me salivating for more. Dark wailing goth rock. (Rick)

Large Professor (production on this track) keeps that MJ “Human Nature” beat at the center here and honestly any beat with that at the center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Nature_%28Michael_Jackson_song%29#Sampling ) has my positive at tention. NAS’s “Illmatic” is a top contender for best hip-hop album ever (I will not postulate any further than that, but it’s one that I never get sick of). This is the last song off that and it always leaves me wanting more (which at that point – and this is true – I usually go to 9th Wonder’s “God’s Stepson” and am satiated). (Rick)

We hope that someday ROBOTS AND EMPIRE get back together for at least one more show. This 4-piece post-hardcore outfit from Poughkeepsie, NY, used to play CT about once every six weeks for years, bringing out everyone’s inner groove-mosher. I would lose my mind when they played. Check out the other projects the members have going on now, Living Laser & Winterlong. Both bands will have new records out soon!

Com Truise captures that late 80’s future aesthetic (portrayed future from that time) in this short thriller. Put on your sunglasses because there is a lot of neon grafx going ’round this elektro traxxx.

Last month, hugely influential band, The Stooges announced that they were working on new material for the first time since 2007’s, “The Weirdness”. This week, we got restocked on a bunch of older Stooges titles. Check out this documentary short on one of the most important bands in rock history.

HTRK – “Bendin'” from Ghostly International on Vimeo.

HTRK and Tropic of Cancer have a split coming from Ghostly International soon. I’m looking very much forward to it. Can’t get enough of the slow melancholic reverberations. (Rick)

A friend of mine traded in a copy of American Nightmare’s “The Sun Isn’t Getting Any Brighter” 7″ yesterday and it made me think about all the times I saw them in the early 2000’s. Exploding out of the booming Boston straightedge scene, the y took aggressive hardcore to new heights, by fusing hard mosh parts with darker introspective lyrics. Deathwish Inc. will be releasing a documentary about the bands recent reunion shows. Check out the trailer.

Tomorrow night, the post-hardcore band Texas is the Reason will be performing for the first time since their 2006 reunion as the headliner of night 1 of Revelation Records 25th Anniversary Fest in New York City. TITR to me, is one of the most important “emo” bands of the 90’s. Check out what the band has to say about playing together again in this short documentary video.

We recently got some of these in (on CD and LP) from ITALIANS DO IT BETTER; CHROMATICS third album of fuzzy dreamy disco pop goodness.

We just cracked open a box filled with Xibalba – “Hasta La Muerte” LPs. Crushingly heavy beatdown mosh parts, low growled vocals, these guys are pulling off a style of music that is all but dead in 2012. Southern Lord Records has really nailed it with this one. Check out this video where they party, mosh, & do some apartment couch-wrestling. Also note the “Kuato Lives” and “Warriors” tags.

Got the Aphex Twin reissues of the “Richard D. James” album and “… I Care Because You Do” LPs. This song’s not on those but is arguably his most iconic video (directed by Chris Cunningham). This song was also covered by The Dillinger Esca pe Plan with Mike Patton (of course, I 100% prefer the original). Creepy and not so subtle (though at the time when Digital Hardcore Recordings was at their peak this comes off as completely minimal) face grabbing (get it?) electronic music. (Rick)

Recently, Safety Meeting Records dropped off copies of the newly pressed & extremely limited (95 copies!) LP version of Crooked Hook’s self-titled album. Originally released six years ago only as a CD, this 3-piece played a blend of psyched elic garage rock with deep stonery riffs. This was a band I was aware of at the time, but didn’t truly appreciate until now. Check out this live video of them playing at Bar. If anyone has any better quality videos, let me know! (Josh)

In just two weeks, Chain Of Strength will be hitting the stage for two nights in New York as part of the Revelation Records 25th Anniversary showcase. Chain… was my favorite of the youth crew era Rev bands, so it’s a pretty big deal for me to be able to see them live. Here’s a video of them playing a secret show a couple weeks ago in CA.

We got some used Iron Maiden vinyl in last night. Among them was the 12″ single for “Aces High” still sealed. Maiden stuff is worth picking up for the iconic album imagery alone (seriously, if you find even beat-to-crap copies that would never play and they’re only a few dollars – still pick them up!), but beyond all that everyone knows, they just plain shred.

Yes! I was really hoping this would get the video treatment at exactly this time of the four year cycle. Killer Mike’s “R.A.P. Music” is completely bonkers (this is a good thing) throughout, but man, this track kills it on many levels. Fun true short story: our landlord once gave us some business advice that basically just went like, “Don’t talk about religion or politics.” Well, there goes about 90% (this is not a real stat) of our inventory. (Rick)

My First Step Towards Failure at The Unitarian Church – August 12th, 2001 from The Sin in Grey on Vimeo.

My First Step Toward Failure (emo/screamo w/ 3 guitars) appeared on the first 7″ put out on Redscroll Records. This band is important. Without them, and more specifically the beautiful bastard behind the drums (check out his current project s: RATSKIN Records., Styrofoam Sanchez), their would be no Redscroll Records. Before they disbanded, they recorded a full lengths worth of material that was never officially released. Someday, I hope we can put it out. (Josh)

Gil Scott-Héron’s “Pieces of a Man” was one of the first pieces of music I was exposed to as a youngin’. That album still resonates with me something fierce. When Jamie XX and him released this particular jam (it IS a JAM) I felt a bit of youngin’ me reinvigorated. The recent release of The xx (which Jamie xx is a part of) album got me going back to this one (as well as listening to the new one of course). Killin’ me. (Rick)

New Shelves!

I’ve been addicted to the 3-piece british psych/metal band, Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats for a few months now. My first listen to the album, “Blood Lust”, I didn’t really care for it, but over time I found that I couldn’t get the fuzzy riffs out of my head. Check out the video for “I’ll Cut You Down”. (Josh)

Now that it’s officially fall we can delve into the melancholic electronic pop sounds of Sweden (nothing was stopping me from doing this mid-summer either). Fever Ray Fever Ray is Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife (which she does with her brother, Olof). There is a nicely written full bio on her site here: http://feverray.com/biography/ We talk about dishwasher tablets.

Supreme Cuts recently teamed up with Haleek Maul for a free mixtape. Just before that they released “Whispers In The Dark” on 12″ glow in the dark vinyl (which we have here) on Dovecote Records. This video is for a track off their now out of print first release (a 10″ on Small Plates Records). Chilled out hip-hop illbience. (Rick)

Just got some copies of this (LP comes with CD). Good Goblin influenced prog funk soundtrackings.

Thee Oh Sees just came out with a new record an we have that, but this one is from their 2008 LP, “The Master’s Bedroom…” which is the one that first really dragged me in to many repeated listens. (Rick)

Danny Brown is playing in CT very soon (23rd at Toad’s Place). The XXX album came out last year as a free download and then later as a CD and then on Record Store Day as an LP+7″. This video is a fun rap romp dealing with some not fun ideas (of being grown up).

We were on a serious soundtrack kick a little while ago and thanks to Death Waltz Recording Company that streak is not ending anytime soon. The latest one we’ve got in stock is the soundtrack to the film who’s trailer is below. Pretty perfect for the season too.

Just over a year ago this won a contest to be the official video for this J Dilla The J Dilla Foundation OFFICIAL J DILLA track. Donuts has had a couple re-releases in the past some years and for good reason. One of (if not the top of the crop) best examples of a strictly hip-hop beat album (I liken it to grindcore – it gets its message across and moves on). So solid. (Rick)

World renowned singer/songwriter & animal rights activist Morrissey (formerly of The Smiths, Slaughter & The Dogs) will be performing October 6th at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. I’m really excited for this show. (Josh)

The new Dinosaur Jr album has been in steady rotation since we got it in a few days back. This video is really fun (done by the Funny Or Die camp). Slacking grunge with an upbeat vibe at its heart.

Barstow at Brass City Records 3 from The Sin in Grey on Vimeo.

The third release put out by Redscroll Records was a split 7″ by Barstow & A Days Refrain. A Days Refrain had releases on Robotic Empire & Alone Records, making them a little more well known. Barstow on the other hand was a CT gem that didn ‘t venture far from home. To make the covers for this record, we snuck into a Manhattan office building after hours, copied, cut & folded everything taking a break only for pizza. It was a blast. If you’re a fan of bands like Small Brown Bike, you’ll probably dig this band a lot. Here they are playing in Brass City Records in Waterbury.

A couple fellows from Grails (among other projects) are behind Lilacs & Champagne = some great funk prog-scape (soundtrack music with vocals). This video fits the mood quite well.
