Call ahead if there’s a particular release you’re curious about. 17th Of April 2015 Update: RECORD STORE DAY PREVIEW!

17th Of April 2015 Update of New and Key Restocked Items +
RECORD STORE DAY PREVIEW!
at Redscroll Records

Redscroll-RSD EDIT

In this update you will be able to read and get excited over the list of available items in our store for Record Store Day (April 18th, 2015; Hours 8AM-10PM). If you’ve been through before on RSD you know the deal and what to expect, but just in case you’re new or need a refresher I’m going to go over a few things:

RSD 2015 PARKING DIAGRAM
This map shows where you should be able to park with ease. There is a free lot across the street from our front door (entrance besides Western Fashion Y Mas and also on the far side from off Center Street) and also across the train tracks from our back door (near Brothers Restaurant). There will be spots marked off for our RSD Tent (where the line will form) and for food trucks. Spots will also be specifically marked as designated for our neighbors (got to keep in good graces with them) – please heed these and be good!

Record Store Day is HUGE these days. Not just here, but everywhere. Articles about how huge Record Store has gotten and people’s feelings on it have been flooding my feed this past week.

Be aware, we are doing our best to quicken things up year to year. We are doing our best to make your visit and possible long wait in line as comfortable (even pleasurable) as possible.

Food trucks will be arriving in the morning (Hardcore Sweets [cupcakes] will probably arrive early-ish, G-Monkey will be arriving at about 10AM).

If you plan to stand in line for releases please plan accordingly.  If you are in line please have friends/neighbors (we’re all friends here, right?) near you keep your spot to go to a donut shop, local purveyor, what-have-you to get a snack/breakfast and/or use the bathroom (use the honor system with respect and DO NOT hold spots for people that are not there yet [your friend arriving later must line up in the back]). Once you see any of us here (we should be there around 6AM) and you need to use the bathroom let us know and we’ll help you out.  We will have someone patrolling the line and handing out water as well. It’s supposed to be pretty warm – dress appropriately!

As much as we’d like to have every possible thing on hand in quantities exactly matching the demand it just can’t work that way. We order a tremendous amount as do many other stores. We are allocated certain amounts of things and ultimately we get a lot because we put in the leg work. That said, we get less than we order and in some cases we miss out on items completely (trust us, it’s not purposeful by any stretch). We want everyone to be happy in the end so be excellent to each other.

Goodie bags will be available for the first 100 or so (that number is not exact, but close) folks to check out. Bags differ greatly in content and are generally full of fun stuff from such friends as: Lovecraft Tattoo, Manic Productions, Arc Agency, Brass City Boss Sounds, Shogun Screenprinting, No Idea, Run For Cover, Twin Lakes Records, Peppermint Daydream Records, Square of Opposition, Krust Pizza Bourbon Bar, Erased Tapes, Sub Pop, No Idea, Topshelf Records, Deathwish, and a whole lot more!

RECORD STORE DAY Update on the top followed by our normal Update below. (after the break) Continue reading 17th Of April 2015 Update: RECORD STORE DAY PREVIEW!

Record Store Day Preview: 10 Shop Picks

As we approach Record Store Day we thought we’d point out a few things that we here at the shop are particularly interested in. Here they are in alphabetical form. 10 releases we think are worth a look and listen to. You can check the full list of official RSD sanctioned titles out at: http://recordstoreday.com/ We’ll have the full list of what we have on our April 17th Update (and we won’t be able to answer any questions beyond that about availability before then). Enjoy this list!

Brand New “Deja Entendu” 2LP
brand new deja
One of the most heavily sought out pop-punk releases of all time. Original copies have gone for hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Frank Ilfman “Big Bad Wolves (OST)” LP
Big Bad Wolves
Frank Ilfman’s score to the Israeli thriller BIG BAD WOLVES. Acclaimed worldwide and called “the best film of 2013” by Quentin Tarantino, the film is a heady and disturbing treatise on violence and the use of torture. The main theme is beautiful, with searching strings and woodwind counterpoint, and a sense of hope. But there’s a sinister undercurrent, giving a sense of inevitability. It’s a menacing piece of work, emotionally intense yet surprisingly beautiful.

Julius And His Modern Aces “James Brown Rides On” 7″
Julius
Facsimile reissue of a 1970 single by the mighty Orlando Julius and His Modern Aces. Funk Afrobeat niceness.

Mark Kozelek “What’s Next To The Moon?” 12″
Kozelek
Early solo effort from Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters). The album is composed entirely of drastically rearranged acoustic covers of Bon Scott-era AC/DC songs. (Note: There are a couple other Mark Kozelek related titles coming out for RSD that also are on our radar, too, yes.)

Metallica “No Life Til Leather” Cassette Tape
Metallica
Recorded in the summer of 1982, No Life Til Leather is Metallica’s most widely-circulated demo tape. The track listing contains early versions of their debut album ‘Kill Em All’ which has gone triple Platinum. This is the first time Metallica are releasing it officially, remastered for Record Store Day.  This is the one non-vinyl release we have on this list and of the few we’re hoping to have in for RSD. Remember when Metallica was great?!

Oneohtrix Point Never “Commissions II” LP
Oneohtrix
Inspired by the video game soundtracks of celebrated Japanese artist Manabu Namiki, Lopatin’s arrangement “Bullet Hell Abstraction” deconstructs both the sonic and visual aesthetic of Japanese video games. Commissions II includes selections that he recorded for the performance, which was commissioned by Redbull Music Academy and originally premiered at Womb, Tokyo (November 2014). With affection for the original piece, Lopatin composed and performed live a re¬imagined soundtrack to Koji Morimoto’s historic anime film Magnetic Rose. In collaboration with Lopatin, Robert Beatty produced the cover artwork layout, and the packaging features TBC (black foil print jacket) with die cut view of inner sleeve.

Polaris “Music From The Adventures of Pete and Pete” LP
Polaris
Caren’s favorite fake band out of Connecticut! Polaris was a one-off musical project in the mid-1990s involving members of the New Haven indie rock band Miracle Legion. Mark Mulcahy, Scott Boutier, and Dave McCaffrey performed music for the cult Nickelodeon television show The Adventures of Pete & Pete under the name Polaris performed many of the songs featured on the show, including the theme song, “Hey Sandy”. This will be the first ever vinyl release of the record. Bonus: They’re playing at College Street Music Hall on May 9th!

Power Glove “TITLE EP1” LP
Power Glove
EP1 is the debut EP from Power Glove, the mystery Australian duo so far known for their synth-tastic, ’80s-inspired score to video game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Stephen Rennicks “Frank OST” LP
Frank
Stephen Rennicks’s song based soundtrack to Leonard Abrahamson’s fantastical black comedy featuring Michael Fassbender as the masked leader of a doomed avant-rock group.
The film is inspired by cult comedy creation Frank Sidebottom, as well as underground music legends Captain Beefheart and Daniel Johnston.

Swans 12″ EP
Swans
SWANS are LOUD and they don’t care that this is unofficially for RSD. Nor do we. The first Swans 12″, originally released on Labor Records 1982

Philadelphia’s Hex Inverter delivers their debut self-titled release via Redscroll Records (vinyl – February 16th) and Translation Loss Records (cd & digital – February 10th).  Hex Inverter consists of eight lo-fi songs/soundscapes that draw influence from Pink Floyd, Genesis and your favorite 70’s horror film scores.

The self-titled record was produced and recorded by the band itself. James Plotkin (Khanate, Jodis) handled the mastering and Brian Azer (Sun Kil Moon, Jesu) designed the gorgeous layout.

You can check the album streaming on Spotify here, on Bandcamp here and like on Facebook here.

Edition of 300 vinyl LPs.
CD via Translation Loss.
