Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 5

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 5
BLAMMO! Check these videos out!

Canadian experimental/electronic/pop duo, Crystal Castles have been around since 2004. For the last couple of years I’ve had both self-titled LPs in heavy rotation. Alice Glass has the vocal styling of a deranged cat…but I love it. Check out the video for “Baptism.”

Manic Productions announced this morning that they would be bringing Japanese post-rock giants Mono back to CT(10/26 at The Space)! I was first blown away by Mono in 2003 when I caught their set by chance in a church basement in North Haven where they were opening for The Gloria Record.

Got a bunch of the Blur reissues in this past week. It was always weird that their biggest US hit (“Song 2” y’ know, the WOOHOO! song) wasn’t representative of the band at all (sort of like if you only know Radiohead as that band that did “Creep”).

We recently got in a couple copies of Mercyful Fate – Denying Christ In Holland LP box set. It’s recordings of two really early shows from from around Holland, and include a lot of great banter from King Diamond between songs. There have been some rumors circulating recently about some King Diamond shows happening in the US, which will hopefully come to light soon.

Psychedelic noise rockers, A Place To Bury Strangers are playing at The Space tonight (this was on Monday) thanks to our friends Manic Productions. Check out this video for “You Are The One” off their latest full length, “Worship.”

Quicksand recently played in California at one of the 25th Anniversary shows for Revelation Records. They’re also playing towards the end of August in NYC (heads up – check the internet search machines for exactly where and when). “Slip” is being reissued on LP and we’ll have some of those in a couple months when they’re out as well. (Those tickets sold out fast and we didn’t get a one. Crossing fingers that another show in perhaps a bigger venue gets added.)

If you like Birthday Party like Slug Guts like Birthday Party then get infected by this whole album starting with this track like I have. Scrawling rock goodness.

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 2

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 2
This track from Die Selektion is on the self-titled CD we have in stock. We also have their “Cladis” 7″. Some cold synth (and trumpet) for you in this hot season.
Erryday is Friday to SGP. Southern Screw influence living on.
We have a few copies of the Fabio Frizzi soundtrack to this classic movie by Lucio Fulci. They look and sound outstanding. (NOTE: THESE ARE NOW SOLD OUT! Wow, fast!)
Since last Friday, the internet has been buzzing about the Cro Mags and the latest crazy incident in their insane history. It’s important to remember that underneath the thick layer of lame drama, the music & energy is PERFECT. PMA.
New ZJ video. Probably helps to where sunglasses while viewing. Bright pop. (Note: Souterrain Transmissions is the European publisher; released domestically via Sacred Bones)
Last month Revelation Records re-released Youth Of Today’s “Break Down The Walls” and “We’re Not In This Alone” on colored vinyl. So, this is a great time to (re)watch their classic video for “No More”. Go Vegetarian (I would say, vegan but this video is so cheesy! OHH!)
Intense. If given the chance to see Neurosis, do it. This one is off the album of the same name. At this point the band had become as intense as could be even if less aggressive as they had been in their youth (“Pain of Mind” being a pretty straight forward dirty hardcore punk record).

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume / Happy 4th!

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume
We started posting a daily video on our Facebook page. Of course, not even everyone who “likes” our FB page sees those (for one reason or another). And not everyone we know or would like to know is on Facebook so we’ll be doing a weekly roundup (Wednesday seems like a good day for it) post on our blog. So far, it’s been mostly new music videos (relatively) and it’s all music that we carry (and at least one of us personally enjoys it on a pretty great level).  Along with the videos we’ll be putting up the short (couple sentences) blurb that went along with the FB post (the first one makes this blurb a little redundant, excuse that). Enough words though, here’s videos:

We’re going to start posting a daily video from something we carry (or possibly is coming out soon) and that we enjoy. This first one is some dark dance music that both Josh and Rick enjoy very much. “Give up the ghost.”

This song has been floating around a while (the 7″ split with Purity Ring and Braids came out in October of 2011), but the 12″ single for this song was just recently released and the full length Purity Ring LP/CD comes out in a little less than a month. Pretty great trip-hop gone trill (trill-hop; the sweeping snappy snare rolls really get me).

Tonight (this past Friday) I’m (Josh) going to the Flywheel to see White Lung (Canadian aggro-melodic punx). Check out this video for the song “Take The Mirror” off their new album “Sorry” on Deranged Records. If you dig it, come check out the show! (Word has it from Josh that this show was really great and Bloody Gears was also really cool and worth checking out if you haven’t yet.)

The Inclined Plane – Little Shifts from Jason Devin on Vimeo.
The Inclined Plane are playing tonight (this past Saturday) with Purling Hiss, and Estrogen Highs at InterCambio in New Haven. (8PM $8 All Ages) This is a video from their very recent LP. R’n’R from around here & doin’ it well.

This Coathangers (fun all-girl Atlanta punk rock, with emphasis on “fun” and “rock”) song was the soundtrack to my flea market trip this morning. (Josh went to the Elephant’s Trunk this past Sunday) It’s a real summer jam.

I first heard and felt the wall of sound that is Portal at Maryland Death Fest a few years ago. Since then these Australian death/black metal time travelers have become one of my favorites in the genre.

El-P’s new album is great and this video demonstrates how this CoFlow capitan keeps it completely unhinged (which is probably off-putting to some, but let’s ignore those). [Rick]

Happy 4th, y’all. We’re open until 4PM (easy to remember). If anyone has any leads on fireworks displays that rival this video let me know (you’re probably wearing glasses that filter out mind-boggling if you think you do too).

Record Store Day! 20th Of April 2012 Update

Record Store Day Eve
20th Of April 2012 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records
Hey all! We’re super excited and very tired from all the preparation we’ve been doing for Record Store Day tomorrow! We’ve got a regular stock update too so if you’re looking for the Record Store Day stuff solely you can scan on down (or CTRL+F “Record Store Day Titles”).
Tomorrow we’ll also be using the front door solely as an exit and the back door as the entrance (with a tent!). There will be signs and it will be completely obvious as to where to go, we swear. If you show up early (and if you’re looking for specific titles we highly suggest you show up early), line up by the tent out back!
As ever, Record Store Day items are limited to one of each title per person (different versions of single titles are a fine loophole, but that only really applies to maybe one thing [go for it]).
A couple other specifics for tomorrow (RSD2012): there will be no trade-in or consignment business so if you do need that please leave it for another day; the next day even. We will also not have any listening stations for that day. This is all a good thing, I swear. It helps us keep the flow of the store nice and smooth so we can all enjoy what’s happening around us at the moment (that maybe sounds hokey, it is, but I mean it).
Thanks in advance to everyone coming out. It really is a great thing to see so many folks come through and then of course to see you all throughout the year is wonderful. And we have goodie-bags for the first however many bags we have number of people!
We’re also doing 25% off new CDs tomorrow as a bonus to the non-vinyl among us (or to those of us that like both – anybody that likes CDs, basically).
On to the updates! First, regular stock and then the bounty of Record Store Day 2012.

6th Of April 2012 Update of New and Key Restocked Items
at Redscroll Records

We will be CLOSED on EASTER SUNDAY. Please enjoy the day as suggested in this quick blog entry earlier today.

Quick note about the upcoming Record Store Day (4/21/12) – we’ll be opening early (at 9AM this year) and we’ll have the full list posted the day before (if I can possibly do it earlier I will, but things probably won’t show up until the last minute).  Some releases have already been delayed and a few have been cancelled – that information can be found on the Record Store Day website. We’ll have more announcements and information posted here and through Twitter. Of course, it’s business as usual otherwise and we’re working as hard as ever to keep up and to keep you informed of what we have going on and what’s coming in. On to the update… right after this commercial interruption:

Carter Tutti Void Transverse CD/LP

(Mute)(Buy Online From RSR)
This is a live album without live album trappings (no crowd noise, etc. – taken straight from the sound mix essentially). It’s got the Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti pair (of Throbbing Gristle and their own dealings) and Nik Void (Factory Floor). I was not at the Short Circuit Festival where this was recorded, but I imagine it was even more hypnotic and mesmerizing there and I long to play this at very high volumes so I can try to mock that experience as best I can. The whole thing flows seemlessly and when it ends it feels abrupt (though it is not) to be pushed back into the waking world (or maybe just stare at the cover until you press play again).

Neptune msg rcvd CD/LP

(Northern Spy)(Buy Online From RSR)
It’s fascinating how musicians can exemplify their sound through the construction of their instruments: for example, classical performers lean toward exquisite designs. Boston’s Neptune represents noise rock’s jagged, rough elements excellently with instruments literally constructed from scrap metal (for example, not many music stores sell amplified gas cans or metal buckets.) The result is a very unconventional, dramatic vocal-laced sound right the beginning with the endlessly piercing build-up of “Luminous Skull.” It’s followed by the cold, nightmarish “Dark Report,” which is loaded with sharp guitars reminiscent of no wave and abrupt blasts of radio static. Another highlight is the eerily atmospheric “Negative Reversal,” complete with the same brand of bizarre poetry found in the earlier tracks (“let’s lift the curtain up / see how he operates / he’s made of medicine / an anesthetic.”) The most “accessible” track would be “Rpr,” with more traditional-sounding noise-rock patterns that wouldn’t sound out of place alongside acts like Sonic Youth and Boredoms. For the most part, though, it’s a very avant-garde journey for those who love challenging music.

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan YT//ST CD/LP

(Psychic Handshake)(Buy Online From RSR)
To put it in the most basic terms, this record comes from an experimental Montreal collective that includes members of Japanese-Scottish (Ruby Kato Attwood) and Chinese-Irish (Alaska B) descent. Their culture-mixing origins translate to their self-categorized “noh-wave” sound (that’s no typo – it refers to Japan’s Noh theater.) They manage to fuse elements from an impressive list of both Eastern and Western genres, including progressive rock, metal, psychedelia, noise, folk, opera and even pop. I was weary about seeing such a broad list, but I was very impressed with how they managed to pull it off in a truly one-of-a-kind rock opera.  I’d love to see the whole thing put to visuals, because it really does sound like an interesting epic. “Reverse Crystal // Murder of a Spider” is an easy choice of a favorite with its fuzzed-out guitar-fueled sound perfect for ascending a mountain. Another standout is “A Star Over Pureland,” which features red-hot Lightning Bolt-comparable shredding. It’s not all about heaviness, though: “Oak of Guernica” relies on gorgeous, mystical dream-pop ambience and “Hoshi Neko” utilizes passionate Japanese vocals, a driving beat and a hypnotic synth hook that all build to a shimmering climax before fading into a cloud of sound.
